ALTOONA, PA – Hilbert Women's Soccer improved to 3-1 in the AMCC conference with a win this afternoon against Penn State Altoona. A clutch late goal by
Gabrielle Avallone was the difference for the Hawks in the 4-3 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hilbert got on the board first, as their fourth corner kick attempt of the match was put in the back of the net by
Hannah Brock after a scramble in front of the Lions' goal. Brock's second of the season gave the Hawks the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. The lead was short lived, as the hosting Lions evened up the score in the 29th minute. However, the knotted score didn't last long as
Eliana Rocha played
Grace Zabawa through on goal where she made no mistake in restoring the Hilbert lead for her sixth of the season. Rocha made an instant impact as a substitute in her first appearance of the season and her career. The Hawks took this 2-1 advantage into the halftime break.
It took just two minutes for the Lions to tie the game at two on a goal from Dee Dee Abbott. Just like earlier in the game, the Hawks again wasted no time in regaining their lead
. Evin Stauffer cut the ball back to Avallone who made a nice move to beat her defender and placed a shot in the top of the net for the 3-2 lead. Just when it looked like the Hawks would see this one out, Mallorie Smith found the back of the net to even up the score at three in the 84th minute. With the game headed for a draw, Avallone pounced on a Penn State Altoona turnover at the top of their box and fired a shot in the top corner for the late winner.
GAME NOTES
- Jordan Brown made eleven saves in the winning effort.
- Zabawa buried her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
