HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert Women's Hockey lost their opening game of the season this evening to King's College. The 7-2 game saw the Hawks win their first period as a division three program.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Visiting King's College got off to a fast start in this one. Three goals inside the first ten minutes of the contest gave them a quick 3-0 advantage. The Monarchs showed off their shooting ability, with all three shots perfectly placed in the corners of the net. King's College added to their lead just before the end of the period after a net-front scrum to make it 4-0 after one period of play.
Much of the play in the second period occurred in the defensive end of King's, with the Hawks applying the pressure. Relentless pressure, and good puck movement allowed Hilbert to find the back of the net twice in the middle frame.
Jacqueline Alaburda got the first goal of the season for the Hawks. Her point shot on the power play made it a 4-1 game early in the second.
Abby MacNeil and
Abby Dawson recorded assists on the goal. On their eleventh shot of the period, the Hawks were rewarded with another goal to cut the lead in half.
Kaitlin Cowie and
Brooke Kwiecien worked together in front of the net to jam the puck home. Kwiecien was awarded her first career goal for her efforts. Goalie,
Jewely Monford stopped all nine shots sent her way in the period.
Penalties would be the downfall of the Hawks in this one, as a trio of powerplay goals for the Monarchs in the third period extended the lead to 7-2, which would ultimately be how the game ended.
