Football Comes Up Short Against Buff State

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Hilbert football dropped their first ever meeting with local opponent, Buffalo State, last night. The 44-12 game saw a heavy dose of the run game on each side, with more than eighty total rushes totaling over 450 yards.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hawks offense got out to just about the best start possible in this one. On the opening drive of the game, quarterback Noah Workman completed his first four passes. The completions to Xzavion Galarza, Darion Reed, and Bryce Robinson were good for a total of 31 yards. The ground game was also working early as the duo of Reed and Raymone Gillie amassed 29 yards on two carries each. Gillie capped off the nine-play drive with a nine-yard touchdown run to give Hilbert the early 6-0 lead. A blocked extra point attempt denied the Hawks a seventh point.

A long return on the ensuing kickoff set up the Bengal offense with good field position for their opening action of the game. A tackle for loss by Clifford Zeigler, pass breakup by Lennon Reformat, and QB hurry by Scotty Winchell held Buff State to a 51-yard field goal. Nick Sciandra drilled the long field goal to cut the Hilbert lead in half.

Following the field goal, the Bengal offense put together a pair of touchdown drives before halftime. A Cody Phillips nine-yard score, and a Noah Kimble to Nicholas Bruce 12-yard connection gave the hosts a 17-6 lead going into the break.

The Bengal offense got the ball first and relied on Ale Wilson to carry the load. Three runs for 61 yards were good enough for Wilson to find the end zone to extend the lead to 24-6.

The next Hilbert drive featured big plays by Reed, and Quantrail Moss. 34 total yards by Reed, and three catches for 47 yards from Moss marched the Hawks down the field. The drive was capped off by an eleven-yard strike from Workman to Moss in the end zone. The twelve-play, 83-yard drive cut the lead in half, making the score 24-12.

However, the three final scores of the game all belonged to the Bengals. Rushing touchdowns by Wilson, Julian Maloney, and Chris Boadi put the game away for Buff State and secured the 44-12 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Taivaughn Roach added 13 more tackles.
  • Workman completed 16 of 22 passes for 126 yards and a td.
