PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Hilbert College baseball team saw their record-breaking season come to an end on Sunday afternoon after dropping a pair of games to La Roche University.
Final Scores:
Game 1: La Roche 7, Hilbert 3
Game 2: La Roche 10, Hilbert 1
Records: Hilbert 16-20 (8-8), La Roche 15-18 (8-8)
Game One:
* Michael Contini took the start in game one, marking his 10th start of the season.
* The RedHawks got on the board first after belting a solo shot to left to take a 1-0 lead after the first.
* Both starters posted 1-2-3 innings in the second, bringing the Hawks up to bat still trailing by one. Santino Turello hit a line drive single then stole second base. After that, Thomas Evans belted a 2-run shot to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
* Contini responded with a shutdown inning in the bottom of the frame, but in the fourth, La Roche was able to take advantage of an error to plate a run and tie it up at 2-2 through four.
* La Roche was able to chase Contini from the game in the sixth, touching the Hawks starter up for four runs in the inning to take a commanding 6-2 lead.
* The Hawks wouldn't go down quiet as designated hitter Patrick Whelan sent a laser over left center for his third home run of the season, but it wasn't enough as La Roche took game one 7-3.
* Michael Contini (4-5) took the loss on the mound after going 5+ innings. Zackory Panfil tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
* Patrick Whelan went 2 for 2 with a home run, RBI, run scored and a hit by pitch to lead the offense. Thomas Evans added a 2-run home run.
Game Two:
* The RedHawks struck first again in game two scoring a pair of unearned runs in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
* Hilbert got on the board in the following frame. Benjamin Ratajczak led off the inning with a walk. John Riviere Vejas then singled to center and Santino Turello followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1.
* It was all La Roche the rest of the way as the RedHawks scored eight unanswered runs to win game two 10-1 and send the Hawks home for the summer.
* Brendan Walsh took the loss on the mound after going three innings. Camerin Holmes logged a strong appearance out of the bullpen going 2.1 innings allowing just one earned run and struck out three batters.
