Women's Soccer Comes up Short in Play-off Game

ALTOONA, Pa.  – The Hilbert College Women's Soccer team closed their 2022 season with a 7-nil First-Round postseason loss at Penn State Altoona today.

The No. 4 Lions took down the No. 5 Hawks, and they advance into a semifinal game in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament next week.

Hilbert finished the year at 6-8-3 overall and went 3-3-1 in league action after being a preseason favorite to finish in a two-way tie for sixth place in the 8-team league.

Coach Scott MacLean prepared his team for today's rematch against the Lions.  "We knew heading into the game that we were going to be light on numbers so we made some changes to really swing for the fences.  It worked really well most of the first half, but then injuries crept up on use against it was just too much to overcome this time."

Hilbert and Altoona were testing each other's talents through the first 25 minutes of the game.  The Lions snuck one through at 27:36 and then played even with the Hawks to a 1-nil halftime score.

Altoona took a run, tacked on a pair of two-goal, back-to-back rallies each spanning a four minute spread which set the 5-goal lead and then finished with two more scores before the final horn for the right to advance.

Penn State Altoona built a 26-10 advantage in shots and limited the Hawks to three shots on goal and three corners while working for seven corners of their own.

Grace Zabawa led the offensive attack with six shots (2 on goal) while Macy Kisner (2), Madison Matuszak and Tahlia Kosek each attempted one shot.  Hailey Kuder was the starting keeper and went the full 90-minutes making six saves.

Coach MacLean continued, "I have so much admiration for our senior captains, Macy Kisner and Grace Zabawa, who gave everything they had through some very significant ailments.  They are leaving the team in a much better place."
