Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Kara Rehbaum

Volleyball Hosts Home Opener With Huge Fan Support

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's volleyball team came alive in the third set but it turned out to be a little too late to catch the Soaring Eagles who finished the match with a straight-set victory.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Elmira  3  I  Hilbert   0
  • Location: Hafner Recreation Center, Hamburg, NY
  • Records:  Soaring Eagles 4-5   I  Hawks  0-5
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elmira jumped out early in the first two sets, winning 25-13 and 25-12.
  • The Hawks rebounded and responded to the incredible energy, excitement and support from the loud crowd in the stands and kept the third set close before dropping 25-16.
  • Several times in the final set, Hilbert held at least a one-point lead over the Soaring Eagles with the final advantage tilted their way with a 8-7 lead.  The crowd set Elmira's players off balance which motived the Hawks on the court.
  • Hilbert stayed close through a 15-13 score before Elmira pulled away with four consecutive service aces for the win.

GAME NOTES
  • Elmira dominated the net and service line edging the Hawks 26/7 in kills with a 20-1 advantage in service aces.
  • Hilbert was led offensively by Jessica Cruz-Jackson, Maria Spinelli and Abigail Elisofon with two kills each.  Ashley Page quarterbacked the team with five assists and earned Hilbert's solo service ace.
  • Kayleigh Chudoba kept the ball in play with a team-high seven digs.
