Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Kara Rehbaum

Hilbert In Game Until Aloona's Late Game Rally Puts It Away

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert men's soccer team battled Penn State Altoona in each team's opening Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest this afternoon.

Altoona, who entered the game with only one blemish in five games, had to contend with an eager Hilbert team who stayed in the game until late in the second half.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Penn State Altoona  6  I  Hilbert   2
  • Location: Hawks Varsity, Hamburg, NY
  • Records:  PS Altoona 5-1, 1-0 AMCC  I  Hawks  0-5, 0-1 AMCC
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Altoona struck first when they connected from a restart kick 40 yards out in the 4th minute of the game.
  • The Lions took a 2-goal lead in the 18th minute, but the Hawks responded and cut the deficit to one.
  • Sebastian Flewellyn unleashed a hard shot from the point which sailed to the back of the net at 23:30 and officially scored his first collegiate goal of his three-year career.
  • Altoona took a 3-1 lead to intermission, but the Hawks returned to the field and really challenged the Lions through the second session.
  • Hector Harris netted his second goal of the season at 49:27 when he converted a John-Schroth feed to the bottom left corner, away from Altoona's keeper.
  • Hilbert had the momentum on their side as the fought through the middle of the second half.  They created multiple runs and attacks which could have converted into scores had they finished plays better.
  • Altoona stretched their lead in the 76th minute (4-2) and then closed the game with back-to-back break-away scores 90 seconds apart in the final six minutes of the game.

GAME NOTES
  • Today's 12 shots turned out to be Hilbert's highest offensive punch displayed this season. Hilbert created nine shots in the first half, but slipped in the final session to three, even though they held the ball for longer attacking possessions.
  • The Hawks backline played tough against Penn State Altoona's leading scorer.  Grady Ballard notched a game-high five goals while playing the full 90-minute contest.
  • Logan Peck was credited with 12 saves and Stephen Wetherell, Hunter Holler, Reese Tomporowski and Sebastian Flewellyn each blocked a few shots off target which led to multiple corner kicks for the guests.
  • John Schroth and Solomon Bonane played the full field today never quitting on any play while looking to create a look at the frame.
