BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Hilbert College baseball team lost a hard fought game to Medaille 12-9 in 12 innings to put an end to their 2021 season.
Starter
Brendan Walsh carried the Hawks early in the game as he blanked the Mavericks over the first three frames to keep the game scoreless until the Hawks offense could get on the board.
The Hawks offense ignited in the bottom of the third to take the early lead. With one out,
Matt Kellner doubled, then
Jonathan Wilson singled to left to send him home. Wilson then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, then later scored off a
Misael Guzman Caez sac fly. After a pair of hit by pitches,
Brandon Job doubled to right field to plate
Frank McCabe and
James DiSanti.
Colton Davis followed with an RBI double to put the Hawks up 5-0 after three innings.
Walsh continued to put up zeros through the fifth, keeping the Hawks lead at 5-0 going into the top of the sixth. The Mavs sticks came to life, as Patrick Whelan launched a 3-run home run to cut into the lead. The Mavs would follow with another run in the seventh to make it 5-4.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Hawks would score two runs to extend their lead off an RBI single from
Benjamin Ratajczak and an RBI single from
Jared Welnowski to put the Hawks three outs away from a win.
The Mavs would answer the call with three runs in the nineth off a two-run shot from Shawn Filas to tie it at seven. The Hawks were unable to scratch a run across in the bottom of the nineth, sending it to extras.
After a pair of runs from both sides in the 10th inning and a scoreless 11th, the Mavs would plate three in the 12th inning and slam the door on the Hawks to come away with the thrilling win.
Brendan Walsh picked up a no decision after tossing six innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out 7 hitters.
