Hawks Softball Dropped a Pair to D'Youville in Season Opener

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Hilbert College stepped on a regulation softball diamond for the first time in 379 days this afternoon and suffered a 10-0, 5-inning defeat to D'Youville.  The Hawks began to find their rhythm in the nightcap taking the Saints to a 7-inning game before falling 11-4.

D'Youville improved to 3-1 while the Hawks slid to 0-2.

Rookie Makenna Smith's triple in the night cap gave the Hawks their first RBI of the season.

GAME ONE

Freshman Mattison Arnett went the distance in her first rookie start in the circle for the Hawks.   She struck out two, walked three, gave up six earned runs off eight hits in four innings.

The Saints ace threw a one-hitter, struck out three and walked two.

Emma McNamara's single in the top of the 5th moved Arnett to second base but the game ended after the Hawks' next two batters.

GAME TWO

The Saints built a 5-0 advantage before Hilbert sliced the spread to one run, manufacturing four runs in the top of the 5th.

McNamara singed up the middle prior to Sydnea Schiedel's poke to right central which pushed her to third.  Both runners advanced on double steals, with McNamara scoring Hilbert's first run off the next at bat; a wild pitch offered Schiedel the left corner bag.  Melanie Basile's at bat (ss error) allowed Smith to take home, scoring the second run.

Smith's RBI triple added a Basile run and Bailey Budziszewski's ground-out to the catcher opened the door for Smith to make it a 4-run inning.

The Saints padded two more runs in the bottom of the 5th, held the Hawks scoreless in the 6th and 7th while adding four more tallies in the bottom half of the 6th for the win.

Budziszewski covered six innings, struck out three, walked one with eight earned runs off 16 hits.
