Hawks Soar Past The Golden Tornadoes In Doubleheader Sweep

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Hilbert College baseball team wrapped up their spring break trip with a pair of wins in a doubleheader sweep over Geneva College by scores of 3-1 and 10-4.

GAME ONE

The Hawks opened up the scoring in game one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, both with two outs. Noah Welch tripled to right centerfield to drive in Jared Welnowski and Austin O'Shei knocked in Welch two batters later with an RBI single to left field.

That proved to be all the runs they'd need as starter Zachary Crane blanked the Golden Tornadoes over the first six innings to take a 3-0 lead into the final frame. Geneva was able to breakup the shutout bid with a run in the seventh, but Crane slammed the door immediately after, lifting the Hawks to a 3-1 game one win.

Zachary Crane picked up his second win of the young season after throwing a complete game five-hitter, adding three strikeouts.

Noah Welch led the offense with a pair of hits. Jonathan Wilson added a double, while Austin O'Shei and Matt Kellner added a single each.

GAME TWO

Hilbert carried their momentum into game two getting off to an early 4-0 lead after logging five straight hits to open up the game, including a Jonathan Wilson RBI triple.

The Hawks would tack on two more in the second inning off of three walks and a Zach Scharett double before tacking on one more in the third to go up 7-0 after three innings of play.

That proved to be more than enough as starter Josh McTigue was able to shut down the Geneva offense, allowing just two runs over the first six innings to lift the Hawks to a 10-4 win.

Josh McTigue tossed 6.1 innings in total, allowing three earned runs on eight hits while striking out three. Joseph McNabb closed out the game tossing the final two outs.

Junior Zach Scharett led the charge offensively going 3 for 3 with three doubles and a run scored. Junior Griffith DeMayo added three stolen bases.

Hilbert (6-5) heads home tomorrow morning with their best record through 11 games played in program history. They'll spend the week preparing for their next doubleheader, which takes place Saturday at Houghton College. First pitch is set for 1pm.
