Gawlak Nets Career-High 40 Points In Loss At Behrend

Erie, Pa. – Senior Emily Gawlak finished with a career-high 40 points in the Hawks 67-64 loss at Penn State Behrend.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Emily Gawlak opened up the scoring in the game to end the two plus minute scoreless draught to give the Hawks an early 2-0 lead.
  • Behrend responded on the following possession with a Ashley Seamon jumper to spark a 12-2 run, capped off by another jumper from Ashley Seamon to give the Lions a 12-4 lead with 4:33 to go in the first quarter.
  • Hilbert turned to their all-time leading scorer, Emily Gawlak, to spark the offense. Gawlak responded by scoring 12 points over the final four and a half minutes of the opening quarter to keep Hilbert within two possessions at 20-16 heading into the second.
  • The Lions opened the second quarter looking to feed Ashley Seamon and Jordan Swartz who combined for ten points early in the quarter to spark a 14-3 run to give the hosts a 34-19 lead with 5:23 remaining in the half.
  • The Hawks answered back immediately with points on three straight possessions. Emily Gawlak made a layup, before a Macy Kisner free throw and Ashley Schroeder three-pointer to cut the deficit to 36-25 with 4:03 to go in the opening half.
  • Hilbert used a swarming defense to force multiple turnovers and missed shots over the final four minutes, holding Behrend to just two points over that span to keep the deficit at 11 and head into the break down 38-27.
  • Ashley Seamon opened the second half scoring with a made jumper, but Hilbert's Emily Gawlak answered with a three-pointer on the following possession.
  • From there, the Lions offense went cold and the Hawks were able to capitalize, resulting in a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 40-37 with 4:49 remaining in the third quarter.
  • After a pair of Behrend free throws on the following possession, Hilbert went on an 8-0 run fueled by seniors Emily Gawlak and Ashley Repine, to close out the third quarter with the Hawks leading 45-42.
  • The Hawks offense cooled off to start the fourth, as the Lions began the final quarter on an 11-4 run, capped by a Kourtney Beamesderfer three-pointer to take a 53-49 lead with 5:34 left in the game.
  • Just as the Lions began pulling away, Emma Fredo hit a pair of layups to tie the game up at 53-53 with exactly five minutes remaining.
  • Behrend regained the lead on the following possession after another Beamesderfer jumper, but Emily Gawlak hit from three on the following possession to put the Hawks back ahead 56-55 with just over four minutes to go.
  • Both teams traded baskets over the next three minutes, with Macy Kisner, Emily Gawlak and Ashley Repine scoring for the Hawks to send the game into the final minute with the two teams knotted at 62-62.
  • Alanna Dibble put the Lions in front 64-62 with 41 seconds left. Gawlak responded by hitting one of two free throws on the following possession to cut the Hilbert deficit to one point with 36 seconds to play.
  • Behrend only made two of four free throws down the stretch to give the Hawks an opportunity to send the game to overtime, but before the Hawks could get a shot off, the Lions fouled Ashley Repine to send her to the free throw line. Repine hit one of two leaving the Hawks trailing by two points with 11 seconds remaining.
  • The Lions hit one of two free throws on the following possession to lead by three in the closing seconds. The Hawks looked to Taylor Corts for a game-tying three at the buzzer, but it was off the mark giving Behrend the 67-64 win.
  • Hilbert's Emily Gawlak led all scorers with a career-high 40 points, while Macy Kisner added a game-high 10 rebounds and Ashley Schroeder dished out a team-high four assists.
  • Alanna Dibble led all Lions scorers with 17 points, while Ashley Seamon added a team-high nine rebounds and a trio of Lions tied for the team-lead with seven assists.

GAME NOTES
  • Emily Gawlak scored all 16 first quarter points for the Hawks, marking the most points the senior guard has ever scored in a single quarter in her collegiate career.
  • Gawlak established a new career-high in points after just three quarters of play, but continued her hot shooting throughout to cap off her career night with the most points scored by a Hawk in the AMCC era with 40 points. 
  • After her 40 point performance tonight, Gawlak moves into second place on the program's single season scoring list. The senior guard now sits 79 points behind Angie Modeste for the most points in a single season in program history, a record that has held up for 22 years and counting.
  • The Hawks finished 24 of 56 (42.9%) from the floor, including 6 of 13 (46.2%) from 3-point range, while shooting 10 of 18 (55.6%) from the free throw line.   
  • The Lions shot 28 of 60 (46.7%) from the floor, including 3 of 13 from the 3-point line (23.1%), while going 8 of 11 (72.7%) from the charity stripe.
