Baseball Bows To Penn State Altoona

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Hilbert College dropped an AMCC baseball doubleheader to a tough Penn State Altoona team on April 7.

Altoona (15-9, 6-2 AMCC) won the first game 13-4 and took the nightcap, 15-5.

The Hawks couldn't contain the Lions' bats as they earned 28 runs and 27 RBIs off 23 hits.

GAME ONE

Altoona built an 8-0 lead before the Hawks tallied three runs in the bottom of the 4th.   Hilbert notched one more run in the 5th slicing the difference to four runs (8-4).  The Lions posted five more runs in the 6th for the 13-4 win.

Griffith DeMayo and Tristan Aldinger each went 2 for 3.  DeMayo (RBI) joined Austin O'Shei and Zach Amato with a two-bag hit.

Noah Welch left the mound after four innings after giving up eight earned runs while striking out two.  Jacob Quiter closed with 1.1 innings of solid work striking out one without giving up a hit or walk.

GAME TWO

Altoona tapped three runs on the board in the 1st inning and things look promising by the top of the 3rd after Hilbert led 4-3.  Neither team did any damage during the next three scoreless innings but then Altoona found their rhythm at the plate and outscored the Hawks 11-1 by the bottom of the 9th.

With bases loaded in the 2nd, a fielding error by Altoona scored Welnowski just before Treyton delaCuesta whacked a 3-run triple which lifted Hilbert, 4-3.

In a repeat feat with Hilbert covering all three bases, O'Shei hit a sac fly scoring Shaun Wright in the 7th for the Hawks final touch.

Derek Switzer took the loss, with six hits, four earned runs and two strikeouts.  Quiter closed the 9th inning with no hits, no walks.

The Hawks (3-17, 1-7 AMCC) have a full week on tap.  Hilbert will host Wells College in a 9-inning game April 9 before they travel to Pitt-Bradford then next day.  The Hawks return to Niagara University April 13th for their AMCC game against Mount Aloysius.
