WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Late last night, Hilbert baseball dropped two game under the lights to Waynesburg, 16-7 and 7-3, at Osceloa Heritage Park.
The Hawks and Yellow Jackets picked up the previously stalled, rain-delayed game from March 5 and continued late into the evening with the second set.
Hilbert slipped to 2-5 overall with one more double header series to go before they return back north.
GAME ONE
Hilbert built a 6-5 lead over Waynesburg by the middle of the 4th inning, but the Yellow Jackets exploded with eight runs to take over, 13-6. They added three more runs in the bottom of the 6th while Hilbert tacked a solo run in the top of the 7th before falling, 16-7.
Jonathan Wilson (2 RBI) and
Benjamin Heilig each went 2 for 3 with a stolen base while Heilig scored two runs.
Austin O'Shei (2 runs, one stolen base) and
Griffith DeMayo each added two RBIs off their one hit.
Derek Switzer (0-2) went 3.2 innings and gave up nine earned runs off 12 hits with one strike out in the loss on the mound.
Heilig opened the game with a lead-off single and DeMayo sent him home for the 1-0 lead which swelled to a 4-2 lead by the top of the 3rd inning.
Andrew Wallman singled through the left side and moved to third after a walk and hit by pitch was earned by
Ian Moran. Bases remained loaded when O'Shei, who walked to first base, scored Wallman. Wilson continued the push with a single through the left side scoring two more Hilbert runners which set the 4-2 score.
The Hawks went scoreless in the 3rd, but gave up three runs in the bottom half behind two errors and three hits and then trailed 5-4.
O'Shei's RBI double to left scored Heilig and DeMayo's single to right field allowed O'Shei's run to tilt the score in Hilbert's favor again, 6-5.
Waynesburg added four runs on the board before they tacked on a 3 RBI home run as well as two unearned runs for a 13-6 advantage in the bottom of the 4th.
Anthony DiNizo earned the Hawks final hit in the game, and a bases loaded, hit-by-pitch event scored Hilbert's final run in the top of the 7th.
GAME TWO
Neither team scored in the 1st inning, but the Yellow Jackets put together multiple runs in the 2nd and 4th innings to claim a 7-3 sweep.
The Hawks weren't able to string together enough hits beyond the single runs earned in the 2nd, 5th and 6th innings.
Tristan Aldinger led with two hits, Heilig earned the Hawks' only RBI and DeMayo poked the only multi-bag hit in the night cap.
Henry Bowers made his first appearance on the mound and covered 4.0 innings while giving up five hits, five earned runs along with pulling in three strikeouts.
Aldinger, who got Hilbert's first hit in the game, walked home for their first run in the 2nd inning.
DeMayo, after hitting his double in the 5th, crossed the plate when Wilson reached on a fielding error, and three consecutive singles in the 6th set Hilbert up with its final run of the day. With bases loaded again, Heilig reached on a fielder's choice and scored Wright.
The Hawks close their trip with one final double header in Florida vs SUNY Oneonta March 7.
