RADNOR, Pa. – The Hilbert College baseball team finished their 2019 spring break with single game at Cabrini College this afternoon. The Cavaliers (8-3) won their home opener 20-0 and pushed the Hawks backs to Hamburg with a 2-8 record.
Unlike Cabrini, who tacked on outdoor practices in eastern Pa. and game experiences down at the Matt Russ Invitational one week earlier, Hilbert is still adjusting to full diamond speed. The Hawks haven't been able to practice more than one time while down in Florida since they played doubleheader games every day, except for the rain-out on Tuesday.
The Hawks, who gave up 18 hits, burned through six pitchers through eight innings. Freshman
Frank Propis took the loss on the bump giving up four hits, seven earned runs, earned team-high two strikeouts, and faced 15 batters through 1.2 innings.
Chad Nelson went the longest on the mound, covering 3.0 innings with five hits and two earned runs.
Cabrini manufactured runs in seven of their eight innings, with six earned in the 2nd and 7 in the 7th.
The Hawks battled at the plate earning five hits but were fanned nine times.
Hilbert had a few chance to get on the score board.
Jared Welnowski (walk) and
Benjamin Heilig (single) became the first two runners on the bags at the same time in the 3rd.
But Cabrini turned a double play and picked up their bats once more.
Griffith DeMayo and
Jonathan Wilson opened the top of the 4th with back-to-back hits yet the inning ended with three consecutive outs.
And the Cavaliers turned another double play to get out of a bind in the 7th. With one out on the board, Hilbert loaded the bases for the first time. The hosts closed the inning with a double play around the horn which preserved the shutout.
The Hawks' first northern non-conference double header will be played at Houghton College's turf diamond on March 16. Stay connected to the Hilbert Baseball Schedule page for any changes. Hilbert's first AMCC contest (vs Penn State Altoona) on March 23 has already been moved to Niagara University.
