HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team suffered a 69-66 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference loss to crosstown rival Medaille College tonight.
The Hawks slipped in only their third AMCC contest as they moved to second place in the league standings at 11-3, one game behind La Roche College who jumped ahead of Hilbert at 12-3.
Medaille picked up their fifth consecutive win and evened their AMCC record at 7-7 (5th place) and split the Buffalo Cup series with the Hawks.
Emily Gawlak led the hosts with 21 points many of them off penetration and worked for four steals.
Ashley Repine earned her sixth double double in the Hawks last eight games. She netted 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while
Taylor Corts reached for 10 points and led with five assists.
No other Hilbert player notched more than six points in the loss.
Medaille held a 42-37 edge on the glass and picked Hilbert for 16 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points.
Hilbert crashed the glass and earned 17 offensive rebounds but of the 11 they earned in the second half, only six were converted into points.
Repine garnered nine O-boards and knocked in 7-of-14 shots from the paint.
Hilbert built a 36-30 advantage by the break as both teams shot the ball well in the first half, with the Hawks hitting 50 percent of their attempts from the floor and 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Mavs were 4-for-10 and made 44.44 percent of field goal attempts.
The wheels came off the bus in the second half, as the Hawks struggled to connect from the floor, but went 9-for-10 from the foul line. The White and Royal made only 9-of-34 shots (26.47%) and were out-scored 16-10 and then 23-21 in the final two quarters.
Twice Hilbert built a 12-point lead over the Mavericks in the second quarter but they settled for a slim 6-point spread by intermission.
Medaille grabbed the lead around the six minute mark in the third quarter and stretched their hold to nine points in the final session for the win.
Hilbert (16-5) will travel to Pitt-Bradford tomorrow night to play the make-up game from last Wednesday. The Hawks then hit the road again on the weekend when they face Franciscan University in Ohio.
