HAMBURG, N.Y. – Stepping on the court for the first time in the second semester, the Hilbert College men's basketball team looked a little rusty.
The Hawks (4-9) could not find their rhythm or team chemistry after three days practice and fell to Franciscan University for the first time since February 2010.
Nicholas Parucki went 5-for-10 from the floor to lead the Hawks with 12 points.
Ryan Hogan knocked down three (of seven) 3-pointers and
Dre' Turnipseed followed with eight points and 11 rebounds for the 0-6 Hawks.
Franciscan's Matt Trenton was the only double-double player on the floor reaching 10 points and pulling down 17 rebounds enroute to setting a new men's basketball career record at the Steubenville, OH campus.
The Barons jumped out to a 13-3 lead less than five minutes into the game.
Turnipseed (four points) and Hogan brought the Hawks within three (13-10) before each team traded hoops the rest of the half (25-21).
The Hawks kept it a 2 to 3 possession game for the first ten minutes of the second half before Parucki drained a 3-pointer at 10:12 which brought the Hawks within one (37-36).
From that point forward, the Barons could not miss from the floor and stretched their lead to 27 points before
Jacob Braniecki hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the game.
Franciscan finished the game with a 50-percent 2nd half performance from the field while the Hawks closed the contest with a season-low 23.2 percent from the floor.
The men's basketball team returns to action January 9 when they host Pitt-Bradford in an 8pm tip in the Hafner Recreation Center.
