BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Hilbert College Baseball team swept the Buffalo Cup and AMCC double header over cross town rival, Medaille College this afternoon at McCarthy Park.
The Hawks held on for an 8-7, 8th inning win and stayed on top in the night cap claiming a 3-2 victory in 7-innings.
After today's double win over Medaille, their second sweep in three seasons, the Hawks assured themselves a spot in the AMCC post-season tourney for the second time and they established a new AMCC win record improving to 8-8.
Their night cap win also tied the program's most wins in a season, and with two league games remaining, they have a chance to break another record tomorrow.
Winfred Nelson made his mark known today, earning both game winning RBIs which ultimately extended the Hawks baseball season this weekend into play-offs.
GAME ONE
Hilbert earned 12 hits off the Mavericks starter and
Winfred Nelson's final hit in the 8th inning off the closer gave the Hawks the win.
Hilbert built a 7-3 lead by the middle of the 7th before the Mavericks forced extra play.
Ian Moran (double) and
Connor Duck earned RBIs in the 1st inning and
Eric Flores knocked in another run in the 3rd. Nelson hit a sacrifice fly to score Moran in the 5th which set a 4-2 Hilbert lead.
Flores and
Ryan Perrin's (2RBI) bats lifted Hilbert by four runs as both teams turned the page for the bottom of the 7th.
Medaille manufactured three runs off a bases loaded fielders choice, a 2RBI double and a single which created the 7-7 tie.
Treyton delaCuesta earned a base on balls and sprinted home off Nelson's game-winning RBI single.
Zachary Crane earned his first save of the year closing the game with three quick outs for the win.
Nelson went 4-for-4, with 2RBI and scored two runs while at the same time, he went six innings struck six outs and gave up eight hits with five earned runs.
Michael Goodberry improved to 1-2 with the 7th inning appearance before Crane closed the game strong.
Moran finished with two hits, one RBI and scored three runs while Flores added 2RBI and two hits.
GAME TWO
Hilbert strung together back-to-back scoring innings in the 4th and 5th and held on for the win in 7 innings.
The Hawks collected 10 hits but only manufactured three runs after leaving eight on base.
Jared Welnowski went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Perrin went 2-for-3 but it was Nelson's double in the 5th that knocked in the game winning run.
Derek Switzer pitched a 3-hit, 2-run, 4-strike out win for the Hawks in six innings of work. Crane earned his second save of the day in the final inning after striking out two.
Don't forget to step out to the Hawks baseball diamond tomorrow and view the team in live action for the first time on Hilbert's campus. They welcome Pitt-Greensburg in a 1pm double header.
