HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College softball team outlasted the weather and Mt. Aloysius in a rain-socked Senior Day celebration game.
The Hawks claimed their first high-scoring AMCC game of the season beating the Mounties 17-15 in dramatic fashion.
Prior to the start of the first game, the program honored their lone senior
Jenna Castricone. Thanks to mother nature, the second game of the double header was cancelled and will be made up at a future date.
The Hawks jumped out to a 17-0 lead by the bottom of the 4th but allowed the Mounties back into the game with a top of the 5th 12-run explosion. Mt Aloysius added one run in the 6th and two more in the 7th before the Marissa McIntyre closed the game in the circle for the save.
There were a total of five home runs hit with the Hawks poking three early in the game.
Melanie Basile hit a pair of balls over the outfield fence, went 3-for-4, earned her first Grand Slam and finished the game with 5RBI and three runs scored.
Jenna Castricone popped her second home run of the season and went 2-for-3 with 6 RBI and four runs scored.
Maia Delaney also earned three hits and score three runs for the Hawks.
Rachel Allen (8-7) went five innings with 11 hits and five earned runs while striking out five.
Marisa McIntyre earned the save with a five hit, three earned run, two-inning performance.
Hilbert took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 3rd. The Hawks opened the game up with back-to-back home runs and scored 11 runs.
Allen held the Mounties in the 4th and the Hawks tacked five more runs in the bottom half to build a 17-0 lead.
Hilbert, at 8-6 in AMCC play, sit in 4th place in the league with four games left to play. The Hawks' make-up game tomorrow against D'Youville will be rescheduled, as is today's second game against the Mounties. The solo double header left to be played is a Buffalo Cup series with Medaille, set for Tuesday, May 1 in Hamburg.
The AMCC double-elimination softball tournament begins Friday, May 4th.
