MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Hilbert College softball team battled Mother Nature JUST to get to Myrtle Beach before their first scheduled game on March 4 in the Fastpitch Dreams Classic.
It was a long and emotionally challenging bus ride March 2 but the Hawks made it in time for Sunday's games yet probably felt like they were stuck in the snow again.
Hilbert dropped a close 3-1 loss to Regis College and then suffered a 15-0, 5 inning defeat to Gwynedd Mercy University March 4.
Game One
Regis scored an opening-game run in the top of the first inning and held a 1-0 lead until the Hawks knotted the game in the bottom of the second.
A fielding error by the pitcher placed
Melanie Basile on base and she was moved by
Morgan Grosch sacrifice bunt. Basile advanced to third off a wild pitch and sat ready to run home.
Jenna Castricone knocked her in with a long single to right field as the Hawks' solo score on the day.
Regis used a pair of sacrifice bunts to put runners in scoring position in the 5th inning and added two runs to their lead.
Junior
Rachel Allen went the distance in the circle and struck seven out, gave up two earned runs off five hits.
Game Two
Gwynedd Mercy jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the top of the first inning and added nine more runs in the third to put the game away. The Griffins picked up three more runs by the 5th inning and held the Hawks scoreless for their first victory of the season.
Nateal Papasergi and
Morgan Grosch earned Hilbert's two hits in the team's 16 appearances at the plate.
Sophomore
Marisa McIntyre saw the longest action in the circle going 2.1 innings while giving up eight hits and seven earned runs with four walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Hilbert returns to action Monday, March 5 with a pair of 7-inning games against Penn State Abington and the University of Mary Washington.
