Baseball Splits With The Aggies, Nelson Has Career Day

FORT PIERCE, FL – The Hawks baseball team split their final set of games against Delaware Valley today before they departed for Buffalo.

The Hawks ran into a hot pitcher in the morning 5-1 loss and then found their offense in second game winning 11-5.

Zachary Crane evened his record at 1-1 taking the nightcap win.  He struck five out, gave up eight hits and five earned runs in six innings.

Winfred Nelson (1-1) went six innings, struck two out, while giving up nine hits that led to three earned runs in the opening game loss.

Nelson had a great day at the plate going 2-for-3 in each game while scoring two runs with an RBI in the win.

GAME ONE

DelVal's starting pitcher struck out 13 Hawks collecting six K's total in the first and third innings.  Nelson was stranded in the 2nd inning after earning his first hit of the game.

Flores and delaCuesta each earned a base on balls and stole second base in but never made it home by the third out.

Then, in the top of the 7th, Nelson and Mathew Sokolski singled and moved into scoring position with two outs.  Jared Welnowski's RBI single scored Chad Boldt who entered the game as a pinch runner.

Delaware Valley had already built a 5-0 lead by the fifth inning held on for the win.

GAME TWO

Things looked good at the start of the game for the Hawks.  Hilbert built a 4-0 lead by the time the Aggies went to bat in the top of the third.

Delaware Valley then dropped five runs and took a one-run lead midway through the seven inning game.

Hilbert responded with seven runs spaced out over the next two innings and their 5th inning 11-5 led held.

Welnowski went 3-for-3 at the plate.  The first-year Hawk poked a pair of doubles in the game knocking in 5RBIs and scored a pair of runs in the victory.

Connor Duck, Nelson, and Flores each went 2-for-3 adding RBIs and combing for another six runs scored.

Ian Moran finished with two hits and added another stolen base to his career count.

Hilbert boards their bus and will return to WNY after a quick shower.  The Hawks (3-9) open up the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference portion of their game schedule with two more road trips to Pennsylvania.  Hilbert will challenge Penn State Altoona March 24 at 1pm and then travel down the NYS Thruway March 28 for a battle against Penn State Behrend (1pm).
