LANCASTER, Pa. –Hilbert College battled from start to finish and challenged the Chargers from Lancaster Bible College this afternoon in women's lacrosse. The Hawks fell 21-18 in their third NEAC game of the season but found their offensive power collecting 25 points, the most points earned in a conference game.
Emily Gawlak dominated today. The Division III leader with 10.4 draw controls per game earned another eye-popping double digit number. She won 17 draws and scored eight goals which kept the Hawks in the game up until the final horn. The freshman scored three times in a span of 26 seconds in the final minute making things interesting.
Lancaster Bible was led by Alyssa Wesner with eight goals as she continues to lead Division III (6.25 goals per game prior to the start of the game).
Nikki Schneider, ranked 8th in Division III in free-position goals per game, scored four times and won a pair of draws, but was not awarded a single free position shot today.
Ashley Repine earned her career-high save game as her improved play in the cage kept the Hawks competitive down the stretch. Repine stopped 17 of the 44 shots fired at her today.
Hilbert scored six free position goals and held a 24-17 advantage over the Chargers in draw controls.
Lancaster Bible jumped out to a 7-2 lead before Hilbert got hot right out of the draw.
Emily Gawlak connected with
Marisa Huffman off a draw before
Nikki Schneider went circle to the cage for her first tally in the game just 12-seconds later. Gawlak put a point on the board and then followed with a draw victory which led right to the net at 14:02 cutting the score to 7-6. LBC sandwiched two goals around
Brooklynn Gormel's maker as the Hawks trailed 9-7 at the break.
Gormel netted again at the start of the second half but LBC stretched their lead back to six goals over the next ten minutes. Schneider's unassisted goal at 21:26 interrupted the host's six-goal run in that span.
The Hawks clawed their way back and did not lie down and accept another loss even when the Chargers held a 17-10 lead.
Emily Speidel was credited with three second-half assists, setting up Schneider and
Taylor Corts just prior to another Gawlak quick win, and score that sliced the difference to 17-13 with eight and a half minutes to play.
Lancaster Bible snuck a pair of shots to the back of the net but those points were matched by Gawlak and Huffman (from Speidel). Twenty-seconds later, the Chargers thought their 19th goal slowed the Hawks' rally. It did for four minutes until the final minute of the game.
Gawlak took Huffman's pass to the cage, then won back-to-back draw controls which she sprinted to the net for a pair of goals spaced 13-seconds apart. The Chargers tacked one final point in the final seconds for the 21-18 victory.
Hilbert (1-5, 0-3) has a week-long break before they host their next home game. The Hawks and Bryn Athyn will play their April 14th NEAC game at 10 am on Good Friday.
