HAMBURG, N.Y. – After playing to a 1-0 deficit by intermission, the Hilbert College men's soccer team surrendered five unanswered goals by the final horn as they dropped a 6-0 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game to Mt. Aloysius.
The Mounties, 5-1, stay a top of the AMCC league as both teams head to their final week of the regular season schedule. Earlier this year, Mt. Aloysius posted an overtime victory over #2 Medaille and slipped in overtime to #1 Penn State Behrend which seeds them as the #3 team.
"We were well organized in the first half and our defensive effort was fantastic," said coach
Mike Ertel. "We weren't able to maintain the same intensity in the second half and we were punished for it."
The visitors were on the attack at the start of the game. Their first four offensive possessions were whistled dead after the assistant referee called them offsides.
The Hawks defensive backs kept the Mounties off balance in the middle, and held them scoreless through four corner kicks. Mt. Aloysius scored their only goal of the 1st half off a header on their 5th corner kick (24:36) and that 1-0 score held to intermission.
At the start of the second half and in a span of 13 minutes, a PK handball and two shots inside the box, plus a chipped shot over
Ryan Valentines long arms stretched the score to five goals by 64:21. The Mounties added their final point in the 70th minute with their second headed goal of the game.
Valentine collected 16 saves off the 42 shots (23 second-half) fired at him.
Brandon Bundschuh (3),
Garrett Rehner (2) were joined by
Jon Saeli and
Nicholas Clay with shots on goal for the Hawks.
"Our team will move past this result and focus on the Buffalo Cup game this Wednesday against D'Youville." The Hawks (0-13) host the Spartans October 18 with a 1pm kick in Hamburg.
