HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College suffered a 5-1 defeat to D'Youville College in men's soccer this afternoon.
The Hawks had a few chances to put more points on the score board; but where they came up empty, the Spartans from Buffalo connected for a Buffalo Cup win.
"We set-up the team to attack and to press high. But due to some untimely errors early in the game, we were never able to establish the rhythm needed to create more meaningful attacks," said coach
Mike Ertel. "Our senior leadership was crucial in modeling the standard of play we expect for 90-minutes."
D'Youville scored back-to-back goals in the game's first ten minutes of play which changed the Hawks' game plan. After Hunter Sherman's second goal lifted the score to 3-0,
Brandon Bundschuh finished a
Nicholas Clay pass up the sideline which sliced the game to two-goal difference in the 15th minute.
The Spartans closed the day's scoring with hits 90-seconds apart in the game's final five minutes of action for a 5-1 win.
Hilbert garnered five shots on goal shared by Bundschuh and
Travis Hicks (2).
Ryan Valentine collected six saves off the 27 shots fired this afternoon.
Sherman closed the day with seven points posting a hat-trick for the visitors.
The men's soccer program will honor their eight graduating players this weekend when they host Pitt-Greensburg in a 1pm AMCC contest. The Senior Day celebration will take place prior to the game's normal pre-game introductions/national anthem.
