FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Hilbert College baseball team tried to get the full 9-inning game in, but the weather in Western New York had other plans today.
Anthony Wurstner went 3-for-4 with an RBI and
Sal Carroccia picked up a pair of hits yet the game was called due to rain in the seventh as the Hawks lost a 5-2 non-conference game at Fredonia State.
Justin Hulbert fanned five batters and scattered seven hits while giving up four walks and four earned runs in his second loss of the season.
Fredonia followed their game plan regardless of the score and made a pitching change each inning. The Blue Devils staff struck five out and walked three.
Fredonia got on the board with a doubled in the bottom of the first inning that pushed a runner home. Then one inning later, with bases loaded, a Blue Devils' single knocked in a pair of runners. After resetting the bases again, a base-on-balls sent another man to the plate which built a 4-0 lead.
The Hawks found their runs in the top of the 3rd.
Paul Wujek singled to the right side and Wurstner doubled to the left field; Wujek used his speed to make it home before the throw. Then
Ryan Bonafede hit a single to center field and Wurstner sprinted home for the second run on the inning.
Hilbert was knocking on the door in the top of the 5th. Wujek walked, Wurstner doubled to right center and Bonafede walked setting the table for another run.
Kevin Moore struck out looking and Carroccia grounded out the pitcher to end their last legitimate chance for scoring.
The game was stopped after three Hilbert batters with 2-outs in the top of the 7th.
Facing cold temps and more wet weather through the weekend, the Hilbert vs. Pitt-Greensburg game originally schedule for Saturday has been reschedule to Sunday, April 10 in Butler, Pa. The Hawks will still be the home team and the Bobcats will meet Hilbert mid-way for the AMCC game which will be played at
Kelly Automotive Park (100 Pullman Park Place, Butler, Pa).
