Baseball Suffers a Pair of AMCC Losses

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College baseball team started both games of the AMCC double header against Pitt.-Greensburg in identical fashion this afternoon.
The Hawks posted single runs in both the first and second innings then were shut-out the rest of the way as they dropped two (6-2 and 14-2) to the Bobcats.

Jesus Rivera poked his first Hilbert home-run in the opening game and Paul Wujek scored two of the Hawks' four runs today as they fall to 8-18 and 3-9 in AMCC action.

When Wujek was caught stealing in the bottom of the 5th inning in the first game, he moved to #1 in Hawks' program for Most Stolen Base Attempts (38) in his four-year career.

Christopher Newman was one out short of his first complete game on the mound for the Hawks in the opening game.  He went 6.2 innings with three strike-outs but gave up 10 hits and all six earned runs.

Michael Voveris opened the night cap with 1.0 inning giving up one hit, a few base-on-balls, and 0 earned runs of the four scored. Winfred Nelson picked-up the slack after Voveris and went three innings with four hits, and one run.  The Hawks closed the game with four additional pitchers who shared 11 hits, nine runs, three walks along with four strike outs.

Paul Wujek struck for a double as the first batter to the plate in the opening game.  Moore reached on a fielder's choice and pushed Wujek home for the game's first run.

Voveris gave up a hit and got three out at the top of the second before Jesus  Rivera whacked the ball over the fence for a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to give Hilbert a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless third inning, Greensburg found their strength and hit a 2-run homer over the right center fence to knot the game at 2-2.

Greensburg collected two singles before a 2RBI double scored a pair of runs in the top of the 6th.  And back-to-back doubles in the top of the 7th stretched the Bobcats lead to 6-2.

J. Rivera (2), Wujek and Bradley Perrin earn all four of Hilbert's hits in the seven inning game.

After a brief break, the Hawks went back into action and built a 1-0 lead.  Ryan Bonafede's ground-out scored Wujeck to give Hilbert a 1-0 early.

The Bobcats found a run off an RBI double and a passed ball scoring an unearned run before a 2RBI single scored another pair of runs for a 4-1 lead at the top of the 2nd.

Newman rotated off the mound in the second game and covered 3rd base defensively and batted.  He reached base on an error knocking in Eric Flores for the final Hilbert run of the game.

Greensburg scored a single run in the 3rd, five runs in the 7th and a three more over the final two innings for the 14-2 win.

Wujek, Moore, Tyler Shaw and Anthony Wurstner accounted for the Hawks' four hits.

Hilbert (3-9 AMCC) has a pair of AMCC double headers left on their regular season schedule as they fight for a top six spot to qualify for post-season play.  The Hawks will travel to North Buffalo to play D'Youville College (2-10) at McCarthy Park April 27 and then host Penn State Altoona (4-10) April 30, on Senior Day.

They then close the season with a pair of single 9-inning non-conference games:  April 30 at Bladwin Wallace and May 3 hosting Utica College at 4pm.
