BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's lacrosse team opened the home portion of their 2016 schedule with an afternoon game at D'Youville College's Dopson Field. The Hawks suffered a 16-4 set-back against the 2-2 Alfred University Saxons.
Nikki Schneider's two goals led the Hawks' offensive charge but it was
Brooklyn Gormel's four shots that pushed the action for Hilbert.
Marisa Huffman was credited with three shots and scored once while
Victoria Santos earned the fourth Hilbert marker.
Schneider went 1-1 on free position shots and Gormel was shut out on both her free position shots.
The Hawks won 14 draw controls as Schneider grabbed five of them. Both
Olivia Tom and Gormel worked for three draw controls.
Melissa Goodman was credited with 4 of Hilbert's 20 ground balls with nine other Hawks fighting for the loose ball.
Allison Austin finished with six saves in the 60-minutes of action between the pipes.
Alfred unleased 22 shots on goal with many of them coming off one-on-one attacks. Hilbert struggled to carry the ball to the frame as they finished with only five clears in 12 attempts.
The Saxons carried a 12-2 lead to half time. Hilbert regrouped in the second 30-minute period and played a tighter half. Alfred netted four times, while the Hawks reached twice. Hilbert won 5 of the 7 draw controls after intermission which led to six shots that were all on-goal.
The Hawks (0-3) return to Dopson's Field next Monday, March 22 when they host Loras College (Iowa) in another 4pm contest at D'Youville College.
