HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team kept their play-off hopes alive today after they claimed a 62-54 AMCC victory over Pitt-Greensburg. The Hawks (6-10) dropped the Bobcats to 8-9 in the league and split the series this season.
After posting their 10th victory today (10-13 overall), the 2015-16 Hawks have helped turn the corner for the program who had previously won just ten games over the course of three seasons.
Sophomores
Shannon Rogers and
Kelsi Ebert and freshman
Katelyn Proy found their shooting touch as they combined for 20-of-32 field goal attempts and totaled 52 of Hilbert's 62 points.
Rogers finished with 21 points (8-11), seven rebounds and three assists. Ebert went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe while knocking down 6-of-11 from the floor for 18 points. And Proy did all her damage in the paint hitting 6-of-10 shots (five offensive rebounds) for 13 points.
The Hawks held a 37-32 advantaged on the glass and Proy picked-it clean for 13 rebounds. Both Proy and Rogers swatted away a pair of blocks during the game.
Wyann Jackson and
Emily Speidel had good looks at the rim today; their shots just weren't falling through the net.
Samantha Heiler was credited with five assists, four steals and hit a big three-pointer in the second quarter to finish with six points in a full 40-minute game.
Hilbert fell behind in the first period 13-9 before they regrouped in the second session. The Hawks outscored the Bobcats 17-14 but still trailed by one-point at the break (27-26).
Ebert's six points led the 10-3 run for the Hawks in the third quarter as they went from one-point down to a 38-30 advantage at 4:09. The Bobcats were never able to regain their footing after that and trailed 42-34 by the start of the 4th quarter.
Greensburg hit a long-ball to cut the score to three (46-43) but Rogers and Jackson stretched it back to seven points and that's about where the game ended.
Hilbert maintained their lead by sinking 6-for-8 from the foul line in the final 90-seconds.
In another must win match-up February 17, the Hawks will host Penn State Behrend who are 11-5 in the league and sit in 3rd place. Earlier this season, Hilbert slipped to the Lions 59-56 on the road. The Hawks then travel to Penn State Altoona for their final regular season contest.
