AURORA, N.Y. – The Hawks matched the Express' second half effort, but after spotting Wells College five goals by intermission, Hilbert College dropped a 13-8 game in women's lacrosse today.
For the second consecutive game,
Megan Smith netted five goals to lead Hilbert's offensive attack.
Chantelle Mikolajczak added a pair of scores and
Kelly Mandell found the back of the net once.
Wells more than doubled Hilbert's shots as the Express held a 42 to 17 advantage. Both teams fought for loose balls as Wells picked up 36 ground balls to Hilbert's 30 scoops.
Stephanie Glaza had another impressive game coming up with 15 saves in the loss.
Jordan Botsford and
Ashley Iwanenko were credited with five ground balls each and
Nikki Schneider and
Chantelle Mikolajczak posted four ground balls each.
Megan Smith and
Jordan Botsford each won three draw controls with the other two victories credited to
Nikki Schneider.
Wells won 15 draw controls for the day and forced 23 of Hilbert 38 turnovers.
The Express lived up to their mascot name as they rushed to a 5-0 lead with 18:21 left to go in first half. Smith and Mikolajczak each netted twice beginning at 13:54 and
ended at 6:03. Wells knocked one score in between Hilbert's four-goal outburst to set a 6-4 Express lead.
The hosts scored three goals in the last two minutes of the first half to take a 9-4 lead to the break.
Wells opened the second half by extending their lead to seven goals (11-4) before the Hawks scored four unanswered markers cutting the difference to just three with just over eight minutes remaining. The Express closed the game with two more rips for the win.
The women's lacrosse team (0-11) closes out their 2015 season with back-to-back home games next week. The Hawks host Keuka College April 28 and Morrisville April 29 – both games will begin at 4pm.
