Hamburg, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's lacrosse team battled Hiram College this afternoon. Playing for the first time this season on Hilbert's home field,
Megan Smith notched five goals and
Nikki Schneider added another four but it was not enough as the Terriers left with the 13-11 win.
Chantelle Mikolajcza and
Jordan Botsford each recorded a goal in the loss. Along with her five goals on eight shots Smith had a game-high seven groundballs.
Olivia Tom picked up five groundballs.
Stephanie Glaza recorded seven saves.
The Terriers were led by Autumn Osgood, Rebecca Goetz, and Alyse Gillentine who combined for 10 of the team's 13 goals. Rachel Metcalf made four saves in her fourth win of the season.
Osgood put Hiram on the board first, but within the next twelve seconds
Megan Smith won the draw and took it to the cage to tie the score at one. Less than one minute later Botsford rolled the crease and finished for the go-ahead goal. Another goal by Smith with 22:00 minutes left led to a timeout for Hiram. The Terriers regrouped and scored seven of the next nine goals of the first half, giving them the 8-5 lead at the break.
The Terriers outshot the Hawks in the first half 18-9, including twelve on goal, which helped them gain the lead. Both team had six turnovers after 30 minutes of action.
Schneider got things going for Hilbert immediately, scoring 25 seconds into the second half. The score stayed at 8-6 until the Terriers' Kayla Jenkins at the 15:53 mark. Hiram went up by four goals by using their man-up advantage to lead 11-7.
Smith continued her strong performance her strong drives to the cage led to the next two goals, putting the Hawks within two (11-9). The momentum seemed to have shifted in Hilbert's direction but Hiram found a way to score two goals in 53 seconds to give them the four-goal buffer.
Hilbert was not done fighting. Despite trailing 13-9 with 3:02 left, the Hawks put the pressure on the Terriers and used goals by Schneider and Mikolajcza to come within two. Even with the strong effort, Hilbert came up short, falling to Hiram 13-11.
After an evenly matched first half, Hilbert stepped up their intensity, grabbing 17 groundballs compared to Hiram's seven. The Hawks also outshot Hiram 13-10.
The Hilbert Hawks (0-10) travel to Wells College this Wednesday to battle the Express at 4:30pm.
