CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – Hilbert's senior triple-threat led the Hawks to an important 18-9 NEAC victory over Cazenovia College in men's lacrosse April 18 to stay in the hunt of hosting a post-season play-off game.
Sean Purtill collected seven points (4 goals/3 assists) and was joined by
Elliott Russillio' four goals and
Drew Ulbrich's three hits as the Hawks dominated the game after intermission.
Tyler Nicoloff notched four assists to his career total, hooking up twice in each half.
Brenden Deady picked up his eighth win between the pipes making 12 saves in 55 minutes of action.
The Hawks were credited with 10 assists and held a nine-shot advantage over the Wildcats.
Hilbert jumped on the score board first with back-to-back goals, just twenty-seconds apart in the 4th minute of action.
Nathaniel Hyman followed
Drew Ulbrich's opening score at 11:50. Cazenovia returned the favor and scored twice to even the score at 7:44.
Sean Purtill connected for two, with an assist from
Matthew Simon before the Wildcats evened the score again before the quarter break.
The Hawks converted two man-up situations in the 2nd quarter (
Andrew MacKay/Ulbrich) and
Shaughn Irving and Purtill notched two more goals which gave the visitors an 8-5 advantage by half time.
Hilbert opened the third quarter with three tallies by 9:01. After the Wildcats earned their sixth goal of the game, the Hawks closed the period with five straight scores, led by Russillio's trifecta. MacKay posted two more, Purtill and Ulbrich added one and
Roland Jimerson found the back of the net as well. Hilbert connected on 8 of their 11 third period shots.
The only quarter Cazenovia won was the fourth when they out-scored the Hawks 3-2.
Codie Thomas and Russillio closed the scoring for the day.
Hilbert closes their 2015 regular season schedule this week against two tough competitors. The Hawks (5-1) will travel to Keuka College (6-1) Wednesday, April 22 for a 7pm game to help solidify the play-off seeding. Morrisville is currently the top seed at 5-0, having just beaten Keuka over the weekend.
The Hawks host Cobleskill (1-5) next Saturday, April 25 in a 1pm Senior Day celebration.
