Women's Lacrosse Falls Late in Game in Philly

BRYN MAWR, Pa. –Playing outside in their first game of the 2015 season, the Hilbert College women's lacrosse team slipped late in the contest and fell to Bryn Mawr, 17-14.  The Hawks, 0-1, played even with the Owls who tallied the game's last four goals to come from behind for the win.

Nikki Schneider led Hilbert with four goals, two assists and six draw controls. Kelly Mandell tallied three goals and helped the Hawks with four ground balls, as did Jennifer Cheatom.

Megan Smith shared draw control duties with Schneider and picked up five winners herself as well as three scores.

Jordan Botsford was tough on defense picking up eight ground balls and Meghan Stewart went the full 60-minutes and made 10 saves in the loss.

Claire Johnson led Bryn Mawr with six goals and led a trio of other players who each added three scores.

Hilbert finished the game with five assists while the Owls had only one assisted goal.

The hosts opened the game with the first score, but Hilbert responded with back to back hits and took a 2-1 lead.  From there, the lead went back and forth with neither team holding a larger than one goal lead until 6:19, when the Owls struck for the third straight time.  Less than 30-seconds later, Hilbert found themselves down by three after Byrn Mawr snuck one more in the back of the net.

Marisa Huffman and Kelly Mandell posted scores less than twenty-seconds apart and cut the difference to 8-9.  But the hosts went to the warm locker rooms at half with a 10-8 lead.

Megan Smith led a Hilbert rebound-effort opening with two goals to knot the game at 10 each with just over 27 minutes remaining.  Hilbert continued to bombard the net and connected for three more scores taking a 13-10 lead after that 5-goal explosion.

Bryn Mawr went on their own mini-run over a span of 70 seconds when they struck for three hits and knotted the game again.   Chantelle Mikolajczak found the back of the net to give Hilbert their last lead 14-13, at 9:15.

Four different Owls lifted the hosts to their come from behind win which dropped Hilbert to 0-1.

The Hawks continue south to continue their spring break training in Virginia Beach.  Hilbert plays at Virginia Wesleyan College March 9 at 7 pm under the lights before returning to Hamburg on Thursday.
