BUFFALO, N.Y. – Megan Smith scored twice for Hilbert, but the Hawks fell to Cazenovia College, 9-4, this afternoon at the Nichols School.
Stephanie Glaza blanked Cazenovia on four free position shots to keep Hilbert close but the Wildcats outshot the Hawks by 14 attempts as they improved to 3-4.
Cazenovia attacked the frame hard in the first ten minutes of the game. Three different Wildcats found the back of the net with less than seven minutes ticking off the game clock to build a 4-0 lead. The Hawks defense picked up and limited the visitors but Caz slipped one more score in before intermission.
Abby Webster scored twice in the second period before
Kelly Mandell got the Hawks on the score board at 15:40. About eight minutes later,
Megan Smith and
Kelly Mandell reversed roles from the first goal and Smith beat the Caz goalie for Hilbert's man-up score.
Nikki Schneider went straight to the frame and scored an unassisted tally as Hilbert opened the second half outscoring Cazenovia 3-2.
The Wildcats scored two quick goals, the second following a draw control victory taken directly to the net at 3:32. Smith scored one more goal with just under three minutes remaining to finish with two goals and an assist.
MacKenzie Bresett led Cazenovia with three goals and two assists. Abigail Kortz was credited with 12 saves to grab the win in goal.
Hilbert's
Stephanie Glaza came up with some big saves (12) turning away point blank shots as well as scooping-up bouncing hard angled attempts.
Nikki Schneider was credited with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Megan Smith led the Hawks with five draw control wins and seven shots.
Hilbert returns to action tomorrow, April 1, when they travel to play a 4pm game at Alfred University.
