BUFFALO, N.Y. – Hilbert College returned to action tonight at All High Stadium when the Hawks battled back in the second half but fell 16-11 to the Medaille in women's lacrosse under the lights.
Megan Smith led the Hawks with four goals and
Nikki Schneider added three markers.
Stephanie Glaza picked up 10 saves on the night and played tough while facing several point-blank shots.
Hilbert was outshot 35-18 but come up with a better conversion rate off free position shots. Both
Megan Smith and
Chantelle Mikolajczak struck when they could while the Mavericks made only 5 of 12 attempts, thanks in large part to Hilbert's Glaza between the pipes.
Chantelle Mikolajczak added two goals and
Paige Chatt and
Kelly Mandell came up with the Hawks' final two tallies.
Each team traded scores in the opening minutes but Medaille went on a three-goal run to take a 4-1 lead. The Hawks responded with two scores but weren't able to keep pace with Medaille who went on a 6 to 1 run before the half.
Hilbert, down 10-4 after intermission, battled back and outscored the Mavs in the second thirty minute period, but the six goal deficit was too much to break into. With just three minutes off the clock in the period, Hilbert had outscored the Mavs 3-1 cutting the score to 11-7.
Each team connected for three straight goals, maintaining the same four-goal separation. Medaille's defense stayed tight as the Hawks fell to 0-5 on the year.
Hilbert returns to action next Tuesday, March 31 when they are scheduled to host Cazenovia College at the Nichols School in Buffalo.
