ERIE, Pa. – After upsetting the #1 seeded team last night in the semi-final game, #4 Hilbert College fell to #2 Medaille College 81-76 this afternoon, in an overtime thriller in the championship of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference men's basketball tournament at the Penn St. Behrend's Junker Center.
Hilbert led nearly the entire game, leading by as much as 11 in the second half, only to see the cushion evaporate with 1:44 to go. The Mavs went up by two and looked ready to run away in the home stretch, only to see the Hawks' Sean Weisansa
l drain a three pointer with 2.2 seconds to go and force overtime. Medaille regained the lead and did not make the same mistake twice, capping the win with a steal and bucket in the closing moments for their fourth league title.
Hilbert's
Sean Weisansal and Medaille's Ryan Grandits each share scoring honors with 26 points but Weisansal was the only player to hold a spot on the court for 43 minutes of the 45 minute game. Weisansal converted nine of his 17 field goal attempts and knocked down four 3-point baskets. He was prefect from the charity stripe and pulled in five defensive rebounds.
Jerame Owens earned his tenth double double picking the glass for 10 rebounds and scoring 12 points.
Trevor Stark knocked down nine points and six assists while
Malique McCoy chipped in eight points going 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and at the foul line.
Kirkland Ottey and
Jordan Kumro each netted seven points and
Ryan Bradt and
Xavier Major contributed four and three points respectively.
Hilbert led the entire game and built a double figure lead (15-5) by 12:20 in the first half. Six different Hawks padded the scoring column in that run, led by Owens' five points.
The closest Medaille got in the first half was four points (23-19) at 6:00, but Hilbert stretched their lead back to 11 points twice before they settled for a 39-31 advantage at the break.
After intermission, Hilbert kept their pace and were able to withstand every Medaille scoring spurt. For every Mav mini-run, Hilbert responded with their own rally and kept Medaille at least seven points behind.
At 7:31, Grandits connected at the foul line to slice the lead to four points (57-53) and after a Hilbert turnover, Medaille pumped in a three pointer to cut the difference to just one point.
Weisansal went four for four at the charity stripe to build a 5-point lead again before Medaille came close again after their next two posessions.
Trevor Stark knocked down a three pointer at at 4:29 to give the visitors on the score board their last largest lead of the half, 64-60.
The Mavs went on an 8-0 run and in the process took their first lead of the game at 1:53.
Jordan Kumro's pair of free throws cut the deficit to two, 68-66 and after Jonathan Belton split his chances at the foul line, Hilbert found themselves down 69-66.
An unfortunate turnover in front of Hilbert's bench gave Medaille the ball back and forced another Hilbert foul. Jammal Coleman missed twice which opened the door for one last Hilbert shot.
Weisansal responded to the call and forced overtime with 0:02 on the clock.
Medaille took a quick 7-point lead before
Jerame Owens scored a layup in the paint.
Trevor Stark's 3-pointer closed the gap to two (76-74) but that was it. Medaille went 3 for 4 at the foul line and came up with a big steal that turned into another bucket before the final horn.
Turnovers and fouls were the daggers to hurt Hilbert the most this afternoon.
The Hawks coughed up the ball 22 times and Medaille was credited with 15 steals which they turned into 19 points off turnovers.
Hilbert was whistled for 28 fouls with all nine Hawks picking up at least one foul; two starters reached the dreaded five-foul limit.
Medaille sank 29 of 46 free throw attempts while Hilbert converted 16 of 20 shots.
Hilbert out-rebounded Medaille 41-34, outshot the Mavs 43.1% to 40.7% and made six more 3-pointers but just couldn't overcome the free attempts at the foul line.
An All-Tournament team was announced following the championship trophy presentation. Joining
Jerame Owens and
Sean Weisansal from Hilbert were Jammal Coleman and Ryan Grandits (Medaille), Zane Hackett (Penn St. Behrend), Jerell Figueroa (Pitt-Greensburg), Keith Burgess (Pitt-Bradford) and Marcus Clarke (D'Youville).
Pairings for the NCAA tournament will be announced Monday.
