HAMBURG, N.Y. – For the second time this season, the Hilbert College men's basketball team broke 100 points as they coasted with purpose to a 101-58 AMCC victory over Mount Aloysius College this afternoon. With the win, Hilbert sits on top of the league with La Roche (2-0) after the Redhawks defeated Penn State Behrend in Erie, Pa this afternoon.
Six different Hawks reached double-digits in the scoring column and all 13 guys found their way to the stat-sheet. Hilbert shot well from the floor, hitting 55.8% and sank 11-of-25 3-pointers.
The Hawks were credited with 16 steals off the 23-Mountie turnovers and Hilbert held the visitors to 31.7% shooting from the field. Both teams crashed the offensive glass, with Hilbert holding a slight edge (13-12), but since the Hawks were hitting their shots, Mount Aloysius didn't have many defensive rebound opportunities. Hilbert closed the game with an 11-board advantage.
Jalen Smith led the hosts with 17 points (three steals) and
Sean Weisansal collected 16 points (7-10 shooting).
Jerame Owens and
Malique McCoy added 14 points and
Kirkland Ottey posted 11 (3-4 from 3-pt).
Xavier Major was a work-horse.
He picked up five offensive rebounds (11 total); was perfect from the floor going 4-4 (10 points) and lead the defensive effort with four steals.
Hilbert (7-1) shared the ball today and found 20 assists. Weisansal led with four while Owens and Ottey added three each.
Hilbert jumped out of the gate with a 12-0 run and forced a Mountie timeout at 17:50. In that span, Hilbert sank a pair of three-pointers and scored in the paint. Just four and a half minutes later, Mount Aloysius needed to break the momentum and called their second timeout trailing 21-5. The Hawks maintained a 14-19 point lead until Ottey hit a three pointer with 0:27 of the clock to build a 21 difference heading into intermission.
The Hawks didn't allow Mount Aloysius back in the game at the start of the second half, and they went on a 28-2 run mid-way through the half to build a 40 point lead.
Nine different players saw 10 minutes or more of court time and the most anyone played was 26 minutes.
Hilbert has a full week off from contests and returns to action next Saturday, December 12 at Franciscan University.
