ELMIRA, N.Y. – Four Hawks posted double digits as the Hilbert College men's basketball team remained perfect at 5-0 after their hard fought 80-73 road win at Elmira College tonight.
Jerame Owens led the charge with 16 points and seven rebounds while
David Arlaud came off the bench for a perfect performance hitting all six of his shots to add 14 points in the victory.
Hilbert didn't show signs of a slowdown from the weekend's high-scoring victories. The Hawks built a 15 point lead after 15 minutes but the Soaring Eagles rallied with a 12-5 run to cut the lead to just eight points (41-33) by intermission.
Jalen Smith started the run with the game's first 3-pointer and Hilbert connected on three additional trifectas along the way.
Jerame Owens,
Malique McCoy and
Xavier Major scored in the paint while
Kirkland Ottey and
Nehemiah Kornegay were successful at the charity stripe.
Hilbert sank 50% of their shots, went 9-12 from the foul line and committed only four turnovers in 20 minutes of action. Owens, McCoy, Smith and
Sean Weisansal carried the bulk of the offense combining for 21 of the Hawks' 28 first half shots.
Hilbert opened the second period on a 9-2 run and established another 15 point lead, 50-35 after three and a half minutes of action. Dave Arlaud chipped in four of the team's 9 points in that time span.
Elmira slowly crawled back in the game and cut the score to five points on several occasions. When the Soaring Eagles got it to three points (68-65), Hilbert called a timeout with 2:59 on the clock. Ottey finished a three-shot offensive possession to give Hilbert another 5-point lead and capped the 7-0 run with two freebies at the foul line with exactly one minute on the clock.
Hilbert closed the game going 4-for-6 at the charity stripe and a dunk from Arlaud to claim another road victory. Arlaud (2 blocks) and McCoy were perfect from the field and Smith went 4-4 from the foul line in the second half.
Hilbert was only credited with 9 steals but earned 27 points off Elmira's turnovers. Elmira, on the other hand worked hard for 12 offensive rebounds which they converted into 21 points.
The Hawks have a few days off from practice to travel home or spend time with good friends to enjoy a Thanksgiving holiday. They return to action November 28 for a double header non-conference contest with the women's teams.
