HAMBURG, N.Y. –
Travis Hicks scored his first game-winning goal as he led the Hilbert College men's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over D'Youville College today. The Hawks improved to 1-3 in AMCC play while they dropped D'Youville to 0-3.
D'Youville (1-10) opened the game's scoring in the 13th minute when a loose ball in front of the net was pushed past Hilbert's
Ryan Valentine.
Austin Mathis carried the ball up the left sideline and served a ball to
Travis Hicks in the box 16-mintues later. The sophomore forward touched the ball to the lower right corner of the frame to even the score at 1-1.
Ten minutes later
Jacob Fiorello flicked the ball with a quick header over the defender up the middle of the field to the waiting Hicks who, again, found the back of the net for his second collegiate goal and what turned into the game winner for the hosts.
Five minutes after intermission,
Alejandro Muniz tallied his first collegiate score when the Spartan goalie scooped up but then mishandled the ball to Muniz foot. Then at 50:31
Matthew Barth converted his first career penalty kick to give Hilbert a commanding 4-1 lead.
Jonathan Davison scored the Hawks' final marker to score his fifth goal this season.
Caleb Denton chipped the ball in the box and
Travis Hicks, looking for a hat-trick lifted the ball too high. Davison kept his eyes on the ball that deflected off the cross bar and headed it home.
D'Youville outshot the Hawks 20-16, but both teams were even in on-goal attempts.
Ryan Valentine finished with 10 saves, his fourth double-digit effort this season.
Hilbert (2-8) returns back to the Hawks' home field this weekend when Pitt.-Greensburg travels north for a 1pm AMCC contest.
