HAMBURG, N.Y. –
Jonathan Davison knocked in a diving header and assisted on both of Hilbert 1st half goals to lift the Hawks to a 3-1 victory over Pitt.-Greensburg in men's soccer this afternoon. The Hawks pulled themselves up to 2-3 in AMCC standings and dropped the Bobcats to 1-4.
Hilbert controlled the pace of the game in the first half outshooting the visitors by four and set-up two additional corner kicks.
Travis Hicks continued his scoring spree with his third goal in two games when he finished a Davison feed to the back of the net at 4:26. Then just 90-seconds later, after Davison's long throw in landed back at his feet, he chipped the ball to the middle of the box.
Matthew Barth's header redirected it over the goal keeper's outstretched hands to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats best scoring opportunity occurred around the 11th minute in the first half. Greensburg was on an undefended break-away along the right sideline, when
Austin Mathis sprinted the length of the field and broke up the play.
His extra-effort attitude was contagious as
Jacob Fiorello chased down a long pass on the right side of the field and got just enough of his instep on the ball to send it towards the box.
Jonathan Davison made a diving-header to score his sixth marker this year and put Hilbert up 3-0 heading into intermission.
The game was full of hand-ball calls and physical play which resulted in multiple restart kicks after a combined 25 fouls were called. The Hawks withstood the second-half push by Greensburg who outshot Hilbert 11-8.
The Bobcats found the back of the net in the 72nd minute to cut into the lead, but Hilbert's tough defensive core (Mathis,
Nicolas Rodriguez,
Garrett Rehner,
Anthony Pellicano) continued to poke balls out.
Ryan Valentine finished with six saves on the day.
Hilbert has a mid-week bye in the AMCC schedule and plays their next game at Franciscan University next Saturday, October 17.
