Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Retakes #1 rank in AMCC with Win in Altoona

ALTOONA, PaSean Weisansal posted 17 points to lead Hilbert College to an 80-77 road win over Penn State Altoona January 11.

Five Hawks reached double-digit scoring while Altoona's Evan Greening was unstoppable on the court notching 32 points, hitting 13 of 14 shots and sinking six of seven free throws.

With the win, Hilbert retakes the #1 spot in the AMCC league with a 6-1 record and they dropped the Lions to 0-7.  Currently, Penn State Behrend, Medaille College and Pitt-Greensburg all trail the Hawks sharing an identical 5-1 AMCC record.

Lifting Hilbert to victory were two 15-point scorers, Jerame Owens and Malique McCoy.  Trevor Stark added 14 points, six assists and the team's only block today.  Jordan Kumro reached double digit points for the eleventh consecutive game scoring 12 points. Ownes and Xavier Major each garnered eight rebounds for the Hawks.

Altoona and Hilbert traded hoops early, but the Lions went on a tear and built their largest lead of nine points (19-10) just ten minutes into the first half.  At that moment, Kumro led the Hawks' comeback scoring eight straight points before Chris Davidson's three pointer gave Hilbert their second lead in the game at 7:27.  Missed Hilbert shots and Altoona's offensive conversions picked the Lions back up to a 40-33 half time lead.

Altoona stretched the score back to nine points just seconds into the second half.    Sean Weisansal and Jerame Owens strung together runs cutting the difference to four points on several occasions, but Altoona responded to maintain their lead each time.

Malique McCoy scored eight points to give Hilbert their first lead of the second half at 11:21. After Evan Greening knotted the game for the last time at 53-all (10:27) Hilbert took over and played with confidence the rest of the way.  Weisansal and Stark hit back-to-back long balls which gave Hilbert a 62-56 lead.

In the closing minutes of the game, Hilbert sank lay ups in the paint besides going seven of eight at the foul shots to claim the win.

Hilbert scored eight more points off turnovers, got ten more points off the bench and outscored the Lions by 11 at the foul line.

Altoona shot s blistering 53.2% from the floor, mainly behind Evan Greening's efforts.

Hilbert returns to action this week January 14 when they travel to Alfred, NY for a 7pm non-conference game against Alfred State.
