Emily Speidel's 18 points led the Hilbert College women's basketball team's scoring efforts in their 55-49 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference loss to Mount Aloysius College today. The Mounties improved to 10-4 (12-7 overall) and currently sit in third place in league standings while the Hawks slipped to 2-12 (4-17).
Speidel went 5 for 8 from the three-point line, sinking six of ten from the field and shooting 50% from the foul line to earn her collegiate personal high and it marked the third straight game she reached double figures.
Natalie Whitman was held scoreless from the floor but sank nine foul shots for her scoring contribution and reached her double-digit average with 13 rebounds, posting her 14th game with 10+ rebounds. Sophomore
Wyann Jackson reached for eight points and gave a solid effort on the glass pulling in nine rebounds.
Mount Aloysius' Ali Maruca and Becky Bard led the Mounties with four steal each and Maruca hit fo14 team-high points.
Neither team shot the ball well, with Hilbert holding a slight advantage (29% - 23%). Each team grabbed a similar number of overall rebounds, but the Mounties doubled the Hawks offensive efforts (21-11). Mount Aloysius was credited with 12 steals with only 10 turnovers while the visitors ended with only 3 steals but 23 turnovers.
Speidel gave Hilbert their first lead of the game when she knocked down a 3-pointer in the first minute. Each team traded baskets the next 19 minutes with the Mounties taking a 26-24 advantage to the locker room.
Hilbert went cold after the break and found themselves down by 8 with 6:10 remaining. Whitman and Speidel brought the Hawks back to a one point difference (49-48) at 3:16. The only scoring for the rest of the contest occurred at the foul line.
Hilbert returns to action Wednesday, February 12th when they travel to Pitt-Bradford for another AMCC match-up.
