HAMBURG, N.Y. – With a big 39-27 second-half rally, the Hilbert College women's basketball team outscored the visiting Medaille Mavericks but fell short of their first victory dropping 68-60 at home.
Jenah Labuski (12 points) and
Shannon Rogers (13 points) led the come-back with eight second half points. Medaille's MarceAnn Dunning led all scorers with 17 points.
Wyann Jackson hit a few bucks in the paint and was a perfect two for two from outside the three point line. She joined three other teammates with seven rebounds and completed the three Hilbert double digit scores with 11 points.
The Mavericks jumped out early and took a 9-0 lead after four minutes of play. Lubuski got the Hawks on the board off a pass from
Haley Oakes who finished with a team-best three assists. Dunning gave Medaille a double digit lead with just over ten minutes left in the half and with 1:12 left, they stretched it to an even 20 points at half (41-21).
Medaille doubled-up Hilbert's shooting percentage (41%-21%) with seven made three pointers. The Hawks earned five more offensive boards but just didn't convert those rebounds into points. With a short bench, the Mavericks got into early foul trouble but outscored the Hawks 23-10 in scoring from the late entries into the game.
After the break, Medaille continued to control the pace of the game until fouls caught up to them again. With about seven minutes remaining, Hilbert began to chip away at the lead and when two of Medaille's seven players were disqualified over a 45-second span, the rally was on.
Haley Oakes hit an unconsciously-long three-pointer with 2:09 remaining to cut the score to 10 points and
Markayla Feaster hit back-to-back jumpers slicing the score to 64-58. Medaille hung on for the win by sinking late-game shots from the foul line.
In contrast to the first half stats, Hilbert held the edge the second twenty minutes. The Hawks reversed the shooting percentage (41%-20%) and held the visitors scoreless from beyond the arc. Hilbert outscored the Mavericks 20-8 in the paint, scored eight points off turnovers, converted 10 second-chance points and outscored the visitor's bench by 15 points.
