HAMBURG, N.Y. –
Trevor Stark's 15 (fifteen) assists reinforced the unselfish style of play the Hilbert College men's basketball team displayed tonight in their 90-84 AMCC league home-opening win over cross-town rival Medaille College. The Hawks (4-0, 1-0) earned their third-straight win against the Mavericks (1-2, 0-1) dating back to last season's final regular season game and the AMCC semi-final victory in Erie, PA.
Jerame Owens led four Hilbert players who notched double-digit scoring. His 29 points matched his career high effort as he converted 11 of the 14 field goal attempts. He struck for six points at the charity stripe and added seven rebounds for the complete effort.
Sean Weisansal canned 15 points on six of nine shotting and earned a team-high eight rebounds (two blocks).
Trevor Stark served as the floor general for thirty-eight minutes of play and finished wtih 13 points while pulling down six rebounds.
Jordan Kumro made some big shots throughout the game and added 13 more points to the Hawks' total.
Jammal Coleman's 27 points lead four Mavericks who posted double figures. The AMCC Preseason Player of the Year also led both teams with four steals and seven turn-overs. At times, the Hawks defensive pressure and intensity caused Coleman into unforced turnovers giving Hilbert another offensive possession.
It took thirty-five seconds for the Mavericks to put a point on the board, and that turned out to be their only lead in the game. Kumro hit his first three of the game to give Hilbert a 3-1 lead and spurred a 16-7 run. Medaille cut the lead to one (16-15) before the hosts extended their control back to 11 points (41-30) with 0:55 left in the first half.
Hilbert shot 48.6% from the floor (5 of 10 beyond the arc) and held a nine-board rebound advantage by intermission.
After the break, Coleman knocked down a three pointer cutting the deficit to four and the Mavericks hung around long enough to force the game's only tie at 16:58. Aggressive defense by the hosts led to transition scores and Hilbert stretched their lead back to 11 points with just over six minutes remaining. Medaille's late game rally made things interesting when forward Cooper Calzonetti's 3-pointer with 1:44 left sliced the margin to 87-84. Stark closed out the scoring with three makes at the charity line for the 90-84 win.
Ryan Brewster had some timely blocks in each half and
Malique McCoy rattled home some long distance threes providing a deep bench for the home team.
Hilbert continued to win the board's battle (45-33) and finished with 26 assists to Medaille's 10.
The Hawks have a few days off before they travel down to central Pa. for the second AMCC match of the week at Mount Aloysius December 6th at 3pm. Follow the website for updates on any live streaming/live stats.
