ERIE, PA – After two close sets to start the match, the Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team held on for a 3-1 home court victory over Hilbert October 9. The visiting Hawks (7-15) dropped their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match to the undefeated Lions (4-0) who improved to 14-3 overall.
Behrend won the first set by two points (26-24) and Hilbert returned the favor the second set, winning 25-23. The depth of Behrend carried them through the second half of the match as they closed the Hawks down, winning 25-12 and 25-17.
The Lions finished the match outhitting the Hawks (.228 vs. .100) and their bench depth could have been a factor in the final outcome. Behrend was able to use eleven players with five hitters earning six or more kills. The Hawks played nine athletes while missing a key starter due to injury.
Two Hawks earned game high honors with
Allegra Johnson finishing with 18 kills (.220) and
Ashley Viengmay chipping in 20 digs. Freshman
Amanda Binder added seven kills and three service aces as
Shannon Memminger assisted 29 balls.
Behrend's Chelsea Magnusen earned game high assists with 33 and Meredith Snyder and Lindsay Bean were credited with 10 kills each. Tory Storino's 19 digs was one dig shy of Viengmay's game high.
The Hawks have a few days off for the long weekend before they regroup for their next non-conference match at Alfred University October 15.
