Softball Swept by Altoona in AMCC Opening Doubleheader

CLAYSBURG, Pa. – Hilbert College Softball traveled to take on Penn State Altoona this afternoon for the first two AMCC contests of the season for the Hawks. The Hawks fell in a pair of five inning decisions to start 0-2 in conference play.

Penn State Altoona used a big second inning to take control of game one. After a scoreless opening frame, the Lions plated seven runs in the bottom of the second to build an early cushion. Hilbert looked to respond over the next several innings, getting base runners aboard in the second and fourth, but could not generate enough momentum to push a run across. Altoona added insurance runs in the third and fourth, while their pitching staff limited Hilbert to just two hits over five innings to secure the 9-0 victory.

The Hawks found more rhythm at the plate in game two, but Altoona once again jumped ahead early. The Lions struck for four runs in the first inning, using aggressive baserunning and a key RBI single to break the game open. Hilbert settled in defensively as the game progressed, and the offense broke through in the top of the third inning. Vanessa Koenig opened the frame with a double, and after another runner reached, Kaitlin Stolowski delivered an RBI double to center field to put the Hawks on the scoreboard.

Hilbert's first run of the afternoon was quickly answered by Altoona, which responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the third and continued to apply pressure over the final two innings. Hilbert continued to battle at the plate, collecting three hits in the contest, but the Lions added three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to close out the five‑inning decision.

Kaitlin Stolowski led Hilbert offensively on the day with an RBI double, while Vanessa Koenig also doubled and scored in the nightcap. Madison Esmond contributed hits in each game from the top of the order. Kimberly Bentley, Alana Yadov, and Stephanie Mirras split the time in the circle for the Hawks with Bentley and Mirras making the starts while Yadov appeared in relief in each matchup.

UP NEXT:
The Hawks continue AMCC play on Tuesday with a home doubleheader against Pitt-Bradford beginning at 3 pm.
