HIRAM, OH - The Hilbert College women's lacrosse team put together a complete offensive performance on Wednesday afternoon, earning a 12-5 road victory over Hiram College to pick up their first win of the season.
After a back-and-forth opening quarter that ended tied 2-2, Hilbert seized control in the second period. The Hawks rattled off three unanswered goals, highlighted by a pair from
Sam Accurso and a man-up tally from
McKenna Rice, to take a 5-2 lead into halftime.
Hilbert continued to build momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Hiram 3-1.
Olivia Horn sparked the surge with a goal early in the period and later assisted
Lezly McComber, while Accurso capped the quarter with her third goal of the game to extend the advantage to 8-3.
The Hawks put the game out of reach in the fourth, scoring four more times. Horn led the charge with two additional goals in the final frame, finishing with a game-high five goals.
Madison Matuszak played a key role in the attack, recording multiple assists and adding a goal, including a man-up conversion.
Hilbert's balanced offense saw six different players find the back of the net, while consistent defensive pressure limited Hiram's opportunities throughout the second and third quarters.
Accurso led with a team-best five draws and six ground balls as the Hawks forced 35 Terriers turnovers. Matuszak forced a game-high three caused turnovers on defense and tied the program's single-game record with five assists.Â
Hilbert went 2-for-2 on free position shots, with Rice and Matuszak reaching the back of the net.
The Hawks will look to carry the momentum forward in their next game on Saturday, March 21st against Centenary University in a 3 pm opening draw at Frontier High School.
