HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert Men's Soccer team showed resilience on Saturday afternoon, battling back from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2–2 draw with Penn State New Kensington on Hawk Field.
The visitors struck early with goals in the 16th and 45th minutes, sending the Hawks into halftime trailing 2–0 despite outshooting the Lions 13–5 in the opening 45 minutes.
Hilbert's pressure paid off in the second half as the Hawks cut the deficit in half less than 15 minutes after the halftime break. In the 58th minute,
Ryan Michelsen finished off a setup from
Vincent Nkurunziza to make it a 2-1 game. Just 10 minutes later, the Hawks leveled the match when
Carter Burke finished a chance created by
Jason Vullo, making it two all with over 20 minutes to play.
The Hawks continued to generate chances, finishing with a 22–17 edge in shots, including seven on goal, but were unable to find the game-winner. Goalkeeper
Daniel Downes made five timely stops to preserve the draw for the Hawks.
Michelsen and Burke paced the offense with their second-half goals, while Nkurunziza and Vullo each recorded assists in the comeback effort.
