Hawks Fall in Title Game

Miller, Sage and Shehadi Named to All-Tournament Team

ALFRED. N.Y.  – Hilbert Men's Lacrosse, held scoreless in the first and fourth quarters, suffered a 19-5 defeat to Alfred State College in the championship game of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

The Hawks were challenged defensively to slow the aggressive pace of the Pioneers who led the AMCC in scoring all season long.

Hilbert concluded the season at 5-8 while the restart Alfred State Pioneers swept all league opponents this year, closing with a 9-6 overall record.

At the conclusion of the post-game awards ceremony, three Hawks were named to the 2025 AMCC All-Tournament Team:  senior goalie Griffin Miller, senior midfielder Jason Sage and senior defender Mason Shehadi.

HIGHLIGHTS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alfred State pushed the tempo in the opening quarter turning goalie saves or caused turnovers into successful clears and quick shots.  The Pioneers converted 11 shots into six goals heading into the second session.  The Hawks attempted four shots on goal at the offensive end and were credited with four caused turnovers early in the game.
  • Aidan Franko put the Hawks on the scoreboard at 12:07 in the second period, and then Griffin Miller came up big on the ensuring Alfred State attack, breaking up a 2-on-1 attack with an impressive save.  Six minutes later, Jason Sage finished a Ty Franko pass to the back of the net and repeated that same performance with two minutes remaining before intermission setting the 8-3 score.
  • Kristopher Newman trimmed the margin to four points five minutes into the third period yet the Pioneers responded on the next offensive possession to set the 9-4 score with over nine minutes left.  Ethan Barlow scored, with an assist credited to Bryan Jastrzab two minutes later yet that was the final point earned by the Hawks.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • A-State held the Hawks to single digit shots each of the four quarters and shut down Hilbert's attack in the fourth, allowing only one shot on goal.
  • The Hawks were credited with 51 ground balls while the hosts finished with 82 in a 60-minute game.
  • Alfred State went 4-for-7 on extra man opportunities as Hilbert went 0-8.
