HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert College Softball hosted Mount Aloysius this afternoon in an AMCC doubleheader between two teams who came into the day 5-3 in the conference. After a pair of tight low-scoring games, the Hawks fell to 5-5 in league play.
Both pitchers went the distance in game one as
Kailey Stolowski held the Mounties to just two runs over seven innings, but the Hilbert offense managed just three hits and was held scoreless in a game one defeat.
Game two saw the Hawks hold leads of 2-0 and 3-2, but a three-run top of the seventh from Mount Aloysius allowed the visitors to take the night cap 5-3 and earn the AMCC sweep over Hilbert.
Kaitlin Stolowski,
Emily Lacki, and
Ava Higgins led the offense with two hits each on the day, while Higgins' game two RBI would be the only Hilbert RBI of the afternoon. Lacki,
Emma Gionta, and Jazzlyn Soliz recorded one run each for the Hawks.
Game One: Hilbert 0 – Mount Aloysius 2
Game Two: Hilbert 3 – Mount Aloysius 5
Game One:
- The Mounties got on the board early as a pair of singles and a walk resulted in the game's first run and a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Stolowski recorded two of her seven strikeouts to wrap up the frame and limit the damage.
- Stolowski kept the Mounties off the board over the next three innings as she struck out three batters and allowed three hits in that span. However, offensively the Hawks were struggling to get anything going as Lacki's bunt single in the bottom of the fourth represented the first Hilbert hit of the day.
- With the score still 1-0 heading into the fifth, the visitors looked to add some insurance with a leadoff single to start the frame. Following a flyout, the visitors doubled their lead with a double to make it 2-0.
- In the home half of the inning, the Hawks got two runners on base after singles from Kailey Stolowski and Ava Higgins, but Hilbert was unable to cut into the lead heading into the final two frames.
- In the last two innings, neither team made any changes to the scoreboard as the two Mountie runs were enough to take this one, 2-0.
Game Two:
- After getting shutout in game one, the bats of the Hawks provided early offense in game two. Gionta and Lacki each took advantage of a Mount Aloysius error to score following singles earlier in the frame to make it 2-0 after the first.
- Alana Yadov worked to preserve the lead in the circle as the sophomore pitcher kept the Mounties off the board through the first four frames.
- However, Mount Aloysius finally broke through in the top of the fifth with a run, before knotting the game at two all in the top of the sixth.
- Following the two-straight one-run innings from the Mounties, Hilbert answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the sixth as Higgins' RBI single scored Yadov to regain the lead and send the game into the final frame with the Hawks up one.
- In the top of the seventh, the Mounties would take their first lead of the game with a three-run effort to make it 5-3. A blank bottom of the seventh from the Hawks gave the visitors the come-from-behind victory and the sweep.
