KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Hilbert College Women's Volleyball wrapped up play at the Keuka Invitational this afternoon with a match against the hosting Keuka College Wolves. After a first set victory, a huge second-set comeback propelled the Hawks to a sweep in their first win of the season and first over the Wolves since 2014, ending an eight-match losing streak against Keuka.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: Keuka 18, 22, 17 | Hilbert 25, 25, 25
- Location: JMW Recreation | Keuka
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams traded points to begin the opening set of the contest, with ties at 1-1, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7, 10-10, 11-11 and 12-12 before the Hawks started to gain separation on the Wolves. After the 12-12 deadlock, Hilbert secured eight of the next twelve points to gain control of the match with a 20-16 advantage. Michaela Rice led the way offensively for the Hawks in this span with three kills on the eight Hawks points. Two kills by the Wolves made it 21-18, but the set's final four points, highlighted by a pair of Molly McKinnon service aces and another kill by Rice, gave Hilbert the 25-18 set victory.
- Keuka jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the second set looking to even up the match at one all. However, Hilbert crawled back and tied the game 9-9 after kills from Riley O'Neill and Emily Garnett. The hosting Wolves would respond to the mini-Hilbert run with five consecutive points for their biggest lead of the set up to that point at 14-9. Three of the next four points belonged to Keuka as they took a commanding 17-10 advantage and looked to even up the match. Once again, the Hawks showed no quit and erased the Keuka lead with a ten-point run that ended in a 23-20 Hilbert lead. Four Jessee Jonathan service aces and a pair of Michaela Rice kills highlighted the match-changing run. Rice's third kill of the set and seventh of the match put the exclamation point on the Hilbert comeback and completed the 25-22 second-set victory for the Hawks to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
- The momentum carried over into the third and what-would-be final set for Hilbert as the Hawks recorded the first four points and never trailed en route to a three-set sweep of the Wolves. Molly McKinnon, Michaela Rice, and McKenna Rice led the way offensively in the final set for the Hawks, each recording multiple kills to put away the Wolves. McKinnon's fifth kill of the set would be the clincher as Hilbert enjoyed a 25-17 victory in the third and final set of the match.
- Michaela Rice and Molly McKinnon each contributed double-digit kills with 11 and 10 respectively. McKinnon got it done both on offense and defense for the Hawks as she led the team with nine digs in the match. Jessee Jonathan and Mackenzie Mitchell continued to set up their teammates with 15 and 10 assists respectively.
