HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College Softball hosted their first game of the 2024 season and came ready to play against Elmira College.
The Hawks earned a 3-2 walk-off victory in game one after going to 8 innings, marking the first time in 13 tries that Hilbert took one from the Soaring Eagles. Hilbert then struggled to make contact in the night cap, dropping a 9-0, 5 inning game.
Hilbert improved to 5-3 overall and shifted Elmira 5-7 early this spring.
GAME 1
Both teams' pitchers were on point and their infield defense was solid, but a few fielding errors gave Elmira the edge until the Soaring Eagles fell apart in the bottom of the 8th. Elmira committed three errors which opened the door for the Hilbert win.
Neither team was able to push a run home through seven innings, so the 8th inning started with a runner placed on 2nd base before the first pitch was thrown. Elmira connected three times in the top of the 8th and scored a pair before Hilbert picked up their bats.
Emma Gionta pushed Brooke Feliciano from second to third with her at bat. Chloe Champagne entered as a pinch runner for Gionta then Makenna Smith reached, and Feliciano scored after Elmira committed their second consecutive fielding error. Kaitlin Stolowski's walk loaded the bases and Emily Lacki's RBI at bat scored Champagne which knotted the game at 2-2. With two outs, Alana Yadov earned the team's first walk-off hit which secured the win.
Victoria Hanley, Emily Lacki and Emma Gionta poked three hits for the Hawks and Kailey Stolowski, who improved to 4-1 in her rookie year, struck out nine going the distance in the circle.
GAME 2
After Alana Yadov shut down the Soaring Eagles in the opening frame, Makenna Smith tripled down the fight field line. That was the solo hit earned by the Hawks the rest of the five-inning game.
Alana Yadov took her second loss of the season through 3.1 innings. She struck out five, walked two and allowed two earned runs. Kimberly Bentley closed the game striking out four with three earned runs.
Hilbert returns to action, hopefully with three more games this week. The Hawks are scheduled to travel to Wells College April 3, to Houghton University April 4 and will host their first AMCC home game against La Roche April 6 back at the FSSJ diamond.
